Morning Green Tea: Calm Energy & Focus
Matcha and sencha both give you caffeine and L-theanine together, the pairing behind the calm, steady energy green tea is known for. L-theanine is an amino acid found almost only in tea, and it smooths out how caffeine feels, so the lift is gentler than coffee's. Here is how our teas compare on caffeine.
Matcha: The Fullest Lift
Shade-grown before harvest, matcha builds up more L-theanine, which also gives it its round, savory umami. A serving of our Ceremonial Grade A matcha has about 41 mg of caffeine and about 28 mg of L-theanine (from our most recent batch testing; results vary by lot and packaging), still far less caffeine than a cup of coffee at 95–240 mg. Here is what gives matcha its umami.
Sencha: A Lighter Lift
Grown in full sun, our sencha has about 20 mg of caffeine a serving, about half of what our matcha has, with a bright, crisp taste that is easy to enjoy more than once a day.

Caffeine Level for Every Need
Yu recognizes the uniqueness of each individual’s body and lifestyle, which is why we offer both caffeinated and decaffeinated options. Whether you need a full-powered Sencha or Matcha to jumpstart your morning, or a decaf variety (Decaf Sencha / Decaf Matcha) for a gentle afternoon lift, Yu has the perfect green tea to complement your day.
