Enjoy the Fresh Taste of Organic Japanese Sencha

Bring the fresh, vibrant taste of Japanese green tea into your everyday routine. Yu Tea's Organic Sencha is made from carefully selected first-harvest leaves grown in full sun, delivering a crisp, clean flavor with a refreshing balance of smoothness and brightness.

The whole leaf, in every sip. Unlike steeped tea, where most of the leaf is thrown away, our stone-milled sencha powder goes into your cup whole. Each serving contains about 98 mg of catechins, including 65 mg of EGCG, and about 20 mg of caffeine, based on our most recent batch testing. Results vary by lot and packaging.

Why Yu Sencha Stands Out

Our Organic Sencha is crafted for those who appreciate purity and tradition. With its radiant green hue, refreshing flavor, and fine leaf quality, every sip reflects the care and expertise behind its cultivation. Discover what makes Yu Sencha a truly exceptional tea experience.

Sencha Powder

Catechins From Full Sun

Grown in full sun, sencha turns more of its L-theanine into catechins, the compounds behind its refreshing, slightly astringent taste. A serving of ours has about 98 mg of catechins, including about 65 mg of EGCG (from our most recent batch testing; results vary by lot and packaging), and because you drink the whole leaf, all of it ends up in your cup.

Refreshing Flavor Profile

Sencha is fresh, crisp and balanced, with a touch of sweetness and a refreshing finish. We steam, roll and stone-mill each leaf to keep that flavor, and its gentle caffeine gives a smooth, steady lift. Savor every sip and let it brighten your day!

Fine Leaf Quality

We grind our Sencha into a fine powder from first-harvest leaves only. The leaves are steamed and rolled into traditional sencha, then stone-milled, so you enjoy the whole tea leaf in a simple, convenient cup.

Sencha vs Matcha - What's The Difference?

Both Sencha and Matcha come from the same tea plant, but their unique growing and processing methods create distinct experiences. Sun-grown Sencha boasts a bright, refreshing flavor with a balance of natural sweetness and gentle, crisp astringency, while shade-grown Matcha offers a smooth, umami-rich taste. Green Tea Leaves in Hand

Whole Leaf in Every Cup

Unlike steeped green tea, you drink the whole stone-milled leaf, so nothing is left behind in a tea bag. It's the same idea as matcha, with a lighter, crisper taste.

Gentle, Steady Energy

A serving of our Sencha has about 20 mg of caffeine (from our most recent batch testing; results vary by lot and packaging), about half of what our matcha has and far less than a cup of coffee at 95–240 mg. With the tea's natural L-theanine, it gives a calm, steady lift.

Bright, Crisp and Refreshing

Our Sencha tastes bright and crisp, with natural sweetness like spring greens, a hint of wildflower honey, soft umami and a clean, citrusy finish.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have any brewing tips or preferred preparation methods that enhance the unique flavor profile of your Sencha?

Our Sencha powder is crafted from whole-leaf green tea leaves that are finely ground into a whole-leaf powder with a wholesome, refreshing finish. To enjoy the best flavor and texture, we recommend the following preparation method:

  1. Use warm water (165°F or below): This temperature brings out the delicate sweetness and crisp finish while avoiding bitterness. Note - taste can differ depending on the water quality and the temperature of the water used to prepare the tea. For optimal results, fresh, filtered water is recommended.
  2. Whisk: Add 1 single-serving stick or 1/4 heaping tsp (0.75 g) of powder to 6–12 ounces of water. Use a bamboo whisk (chasen) in a zigzag motion or an electric frother. Note - material and cleanliness of the cup or vessel can impact the tea’s flavor. Using a clean, glass, or porcelain cup often yields the best results.
  3. Sip and stir as needed: Since this is a whole-leaf powder, it remains suspended in water rather than dissolving. If any settling occurs, simply give it another quick whisk or froth for a quick stir.

For an iced version, mix Sencha powder with 8 oz of cold, filtered water and shake well, or blend it into smoothies.

This simple preparation highlights the natural vibrancy and refreshing qualities of Sencha Tea, making every sip a moment of pure, nourishing enjoyment.

How should I store my Sencha?

To keep your Sencha fresh, store it away from air, sunlight, moisture and heat:

  • Resealable Bags: Our teas come in resealable pouches or individual single-serving sticks for extra convenience and freshness. For pouches, after each use, gently squeeze out the air and reseal the bag securely.
  • Alternative Containers: If desired, transfer your tea to a non-clear, air-tight container with a snug-sealing lid to keep it fresh.
  • Temperature Control: In warmer climates (average temperatures around 70°F), store in the fridge if possible. Ensure to bring it to room temperature an hour before use to prevent condensation.

Over time, sencha slowly loses its color, aroma and flavor. The best-by date is two years after production; tea past that date may still be safe to drink, but it will taste flatter. For the brightest cup, enjoy it before the best-by date.

Stored this way, every cup should taste as fresh as the first.

What is a Certificate of Analysis, and why does Yu Tea share one for its Organic Sencha?

At Yu Tea, we believe in full transparency about what's in your cup. Our Certificate of Analysis (COA) summarizes third-party lab results for a recent lot of our Organic Sencha: heavy metals, microbes and radiation, plus naturally occurring compounds such as caffeine and catechins.

Sharing it is part of our commitment to quality and trust, so you can sip with confidence.

What is the difference between Matcha and Sencha powder?

Matcha and sencha powder are both made from whole green tea leaves, but they are grown and processed differently. Matcha is shade-grown for several weeks before harvest, which raises its L-theanine and chlorophyll. That gives it a vivid green color, a creamy umami taste, and the calm, steady focus that comes from caffeine and L-theanine together.

Sencha grows in full sun, so more of its L-theanine turns into catechins, which give it a refreshing, slightly astringent taste. Gram for gram, our sencha has slightly more EGCG than our matcha. A serving has about 20 mg of caffeine against about 41 mg in matcha (from our most recent batch testing; results vary by lot and packaging), so it is a good choice if you are sensitive to caffeine.

With both powders you drink the whole leaf, not just what steeps out of it. Your choice comes down to taste: matcha's smooth, rich profile or sencha's light, crisp flavor. For more, see Matcha vs. Sencha, or start with what sencha is.

Can I use Sencha in recipes?

Absolutely! Sencha is versatile and can be used in various recipes, including smoothies, baked goods, and savory dishes, adding a fresh green tea flavor. For inspiration, explore our collection of delicious sencha recipes (which can also be swapped with our Decaf Sencha), perfect for any occasion.

Do you test your Sencha (and other teas) for contaminants such as heavy metals?

Yes, we conduct rigorous testing on all our tea products, including Sencha, to ensure their quality and safety. This includes testing for potential contaminants such as heavy metals like lead. While trace amounts of certain elements can naturally occur in soil, we take every precaution to ensure our teas meet the highest safety standards for food products.

We are committed to transparency and providing safe, high-quality teas to our customers. For more information about contaminants in food, you may find resources like the FDA’s Environmental Contaminants in Food page helpful.

All Yu Tea products are food, not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. As with any food product, we recommend consulting with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have specific health concerns before incorporating our teas into your routine.

Do plant-based milks or sweeteners affect the benefits of green tea?

The one study done with green tea and milk found that skim milk lowered the EGCG people absorbed by about a third, while most of the catechins still got through; milk proteins (caseins) bind to catechins. You can read what the studies found in our milk and green tea article.

We don't know of studies in people that tested plant-based milks with green tea. Almond, oat and other low-protein milks have less of the proteins that bind catechins, so they are a reasonable choice for a latte, but that is an educated guess, not a tested result.

We haven't seen evidence that a little sweetener changes what green tea's catechins do, so choose the one you like and use it sparingly; try the tea plain first, since good green tea has its own natural sweetness. If you drink green tea for its EGCG, have at least some of it plain, with water only.

Which health professionals work with Yu Tea?

Yu Tea is a food, not a medicine. Over the years we have worked with a group of naturopathic doctors, integrative oncologists, nutritionists and health coaches; you can meet them on our experts page. If you have a health condition or take medication, please ask your own doctor whether green tea suits you, since green tea can interact with some medicines.

Do you offer your Sencha wholesale?

Absolutely! We welcome wholesale inquiries. Simply email us, and we will take care of your needs.
